Finally, Draupadi Murmu became the President of India, defeating the Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. She created history, becoming India’s first tribal President on Thursday. The 64-year-old tribal woman won by an overwhelming margin against Sinha after gaining over 64% valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of MPs and MLAs, containing the electoral college, to succeed Ram Nath Kovind to become the 15th President of India.

Returning officer P C Mody declared Murmu as the winner and said that she acquired 6,76,803 votes against Sinha, who got only 3,80,177 votes. The counting process has progressed for more than ten hours. All but one MLA from Kerala voted for Sinha while Murmu attained all votes from Andhra Pradesh. Murmu is the youngest President so far and she is the second woman President to occupy the respectful position.

She will take the oath on July 25th. Her victory was confirmed after the third round itself when the returning officer announced that Murmu had already received over 53% of the total valid votes even as ballots from 10 states and Union territories were still being counted. Later, Sinha congratulated Murmu and said every Indian hopes that as the 15th President she works as the custodian of the constitution without fear or favour.

Soon after the results were declared, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP President JP Nadda visited Murmu at her residence to congratulate her. Modi tweeted, “India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of Eastern India has been elected our President.”

He also said that Draupadi Mumu has been a top MLA and minister. She had an excellent tenure as the governor of Jharkhand. He said he is sure that she will be an outstanding president who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey. She is an excellent orator in Santhali and Odia languages and has worked extensively to enhance infrastructure like roads and ports in Odisha.
