Veteran actor Jagdeep, who is best known for his role as Soorma Bhopali in Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer ‘Sholay’, has passed away in Mumbai at the age of 81. Actor Jaaved Jafri and Television producer Naved Jafri are Jagadeep’ sons.
His real name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, and he was not keeping well. His family friend and producer Mehmood Ali revealed that Jagdeep passed away at 8.30 pm at his residence in Bandra. The comedian was not keeping well due to age related issues.
Jagdeep, who started his career as a child artiste, has acted in around 400 films but it is his role as Soorma Bhopali in 1975 film Ramesh Sippy’ directorial venture ‘Sholay’ that is etched in the movie lovers’ minds even today. His catchphrase in the movie “Mera naam Soorma Bhopali aise hi nahin hai” is still remembered by his fans. He is also popular for playing the role in ‘Purana Mandir’ and in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ as Salman Khan‘s father Bankelal. His work in the movies like Qurbani and Shehenshah is also noteworthy.
He has also directed the movie ‘Soorma Bhopali’ in which he played the lead role whereas Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Rekha made cameo appearances in this film.
