In a shocking incident of medical negligence, doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad left an artery surgical forceps in a patient’s abdomen during a surgery which was performed in November 2018. The incident came to light on Saturday when an X-ray report revealed that a pair of forceps was embedded in the stomach of Maheshwari Chowdary. Her relatives staged a protest outside NIMS hospital and lodged a complaint at the Punjagutta police station.
Maheshwari Chowdary, the33-year-old, a resident of Mangahlat area, had undergone a surgery for hernia on 2nd November 2018 at the government-run super-specialty hospital. After the surgery, she complained of severe abdominal pain on Friday, following which she was admitted to the hospital. Medical investigation called for an X-ray which later revealed the artery forceps in her stomach.

The lady is now admitted for another surgery. NIMS, Dr. K Manohar said, “Our surgical teams are in the process of conducting the surgery. We have also set up a 3 member committee, they will conduct a thorough enquiry into the entire development and come up with a report in the few days. We will initiate action based on the report submitted by the committee.” He also said, “The patient was admitted on 31st October and the surgery was performed by a team of 3 doctors from surgical gastroenterology and she was discharged on 12th November. Today once again she was admitted to the hospital after she complained of abdominal pain and the X ray report revealed that there is an artery forceps in her abdomen.”
